My Dream Zig Zag Plant Pickup at the Toronto Cactus and Succulent Show
Why Cactus and Succulents Are My Top Collection

For years I have admired orchids, but cactus and succulents have become the plants I collect the most. They are low maintenance, endlessly fascinating, and come in both common and rare varieties. Over the past ten years I have not missed a Toronto Cactus and Succulent Society show, and each event offers the chance to see specimen sized plants and discover new treasures.

Finding the Decarya madagascariensis (Zig Zag Plant)

This year I finally brought home a plant that has been on my wish list for years, the Decarya madagascariensis, also called the Zig Zag plant. Its striking zig zag stems immediately caught my eye at the Toronto Cactus and Succulent Society fall show, where I purchased it from Han Plant Club. This rare Madagascan succulent is unusual, sculptural, and a perfect conversation piece for any collection.

Species I Love in My Succulent Collection

I enjoy collecting both large specimen plants and small starter plants that I can grow into maturity over time. Some of my favorites include:

Astrophytum
Euphorbia obesa
Haworthia
Ariocarpus
Echeveria

Whether common or uncommon, each cactus and succulent adds character and variety to my collection.

Cactus and Succulent Care in Toronto
Cactus and succulents thrive with lots of sunlight, making a southern exposure ideal. However, in Toronto winters, natural light is not always enough, so I rely on grow lights to keep my plants happy.

Understanding Dormancy in Succulents

Another fascinating aspect of these plants is their dormancy cycle. Many cacti and succulents rest during winter, requiring very little care. Some specialty South African succulents do the opposite, going dormant in summer. This natural rhythm means you get a seasonal pause in plant care, making them even more rewarding for collectors.
