Story: The Hardy Opuntia humifusa
You wouldn’t expect to see a cactus blooming in the heart of a Southern Ontario summer, especially one that spent the winter buried under snow and battered by wind. But right now, on my small exposed balcony, my Opuntia humifusa is in bloom — and it is spectacular.
I found the plant by chance. It was late in the season, just before Jade Gardens was closing for winter. A few remaining plants were marked down, and among them sat a small, paddle-shaped cactus in a plastic pot. It looked a little tired, end-of-season worn, but I was curious. A cactus that could survive outside here? For just one dollar? I decided to take a chance.
Now in its third growing season, it has become one of the most fascinating plants I own. Every winter it shrivels down to almost nothing. The green pads flatten and curl, conserving moisture and energy through the deep freeze. It looks nearly lifeless, but I’ve learned to wait. By spring, it rehydrates, expands, and regains its bright green color. Every year, it grows new pads. The cycle is quiet and steady — and every time, it amazes me.
This year, for the first time, it flowered. Bright yellow blooms with orange to deep red centers opened from the tops of the mature pads. The contrast against the green pads is stunning. These blooms are bold and beautiful, a reward for patience and time. And best of all, it is blooming right now — out in full sun, with no protection, in a simple container on my balcony.
It lives through every kind of weather. In winter, it takes the full force of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. In summer, it bakes in full sun, even during heatwaves. I do not bring it inside or cover it. This cactus simply lives where it is, enduring everything, and somehow thriving through it all.
What started as an impulse purchase for a dollar has turned into a lesson in resilience. My Opuntia humifusa is more than just a plant. It is a reminder that beauty can survive in the harshest places, and that sometimes, taking a small chance brings surprising joy.
